‘Norma Bull’ from the Permanent Collection. The gallery holds 32 works by artist, etcher and art administrator Norma Bull (1906 – 1980). The focus of this exhibition will be our newly acquired oil painting, kindly donated by Janet Holmes. It is called ‘The BRI’, and it is important part of her Wartime works. The BRI stands for The Bristol Royal Infirmary and shows the bomb damage inflicted on the hospital in 1944. Norma Bull painted it while she was acting as an official wartime artist in the Bristol area. It is a welcome addition to our Permanent Collection. About 200 of her etchings and paintings of war-torn Britain were exhibited at Australia House in 1947. Norma returned to Australia after the war and for twelve months followed Wirth’s Circus around painting circus scenes and people. She then settled in Victoria painting landscapes and seascapes.
